Investigation Stage
“Thousands of people are dying each year in situations where first aid could have made the difference. This includes nearly 900 people who choke to death, 2,500 who asphyxiate from a blocked airway and 29,000 who die from heart attacks.”
From an early age I have been fascinated by the workings of life. The human body is a remarkable machine with many diverse systems producing an organism that could never be artificially reproduced. I enjoy a challenge particularly towards a rewarding objective and although medicine is a tough career it can be enormously gratifying, highlighted by the doctors I have spoken to during my experience and on a personal level. My love for science is just one of my reasons for wanting to bring this passion to life with a link to my community. This is what drives me to work on improving and focusing on the lack of First Aid supported at IICS, a part derived from my fascination for the world continuing to be heeled one person at a time and the human element inherent in that makes all the difference.
My goal is to bring about the practice of first aid for students at IICS through receiving my own first aid training to be able to explore first aid with the students at IICS through first aid video’s and an informative website to be used at workshops. I will be receiving training from nurse bilge and with the knowledge that I will gain from this experience I will create short video clips that will be posted on a website with information. I will present these two products a long with posters to support hanging a sign up sheet for a workshop and the grade with the most demand will be receiving the workshop, as they will be showing the most interest. With this I will be able to share my interest in first aid with people who visit on exhibition day, as I will be holding demonstrations as well. This is a highly challenging goal as first aid is an area I have not had experience with at all before, I will be thinking critically and conducting a lot of effective research in order to gain the required information prior to the training that I will be receiving that will require research. Ultimately it is challenging to successfully create products both website and video that will in the long run prepare the IICS community in the practice of First Aid.
When looking at the global context I saw that my project correlated with the area scientific and technical innovation. This Is where the interaction between people and the natural world are explored digging in deeper to how humans use their understanding of scientific principles which then allow the impact of scientific and technological advances on communities. This is crucial in the idea of First Aid as this idea of science revolves around knowing what action needs to be taken to control an emergency that can make the difference between life and death. Emergencies occur all around us with the link to the global context the knowledge of first aid where the use of your understanding of scientific principles will take place differs you from the rest of a crowd during an emergency situation because it allows you to adapt and bring about biological revolution as it is a prime example of the specifically investigated area in the global context looking into how humans adapt environments to their needs. Thus I will not only be fulfilling one of the main objectives of this context but doing it while using the second aspect of this context technical innovation with my website and video products to share and educate the IICS Community.
At its most basic first aid is the initial assistance given to a victim of injury or illness. It affords people with the ability to provide help during various emergency situations. First aid is an area that I have heard about before but never taken a first aid course before. This means that the prior knowledge that I have in this area is not broad. Below you will find a flow chart and guiding questions that I have created in order to further navigate through the process. These guiding questions will then help me during my research using will be using effective websites, documentaries, books, and videos. In first aid it is important to use up to date sources as techniques may change that is why I will be using current online sources. Please refer to process journal entry #1 to find potential sources fully evaluated.
In order to further achieve my goal the following are guiding questions:
1. How will the First Aid Training I receive from the nurse be beneficial towards my goal?
2. What makes an effective video?
3. From what angle, camera position, zoom will the shots need to be filmed in order to present the most effective video?
4. How will the videos be used in the future?
5. Where will the videos be stored? Website? Shared on a file? Google Docs? Emailed?
These set of questions are not the full completed list of guiding questions that will allow me to achieve my goal please refer to process journal entry #1 for more highly relevant and thought provoking questions.
Furthermore, the potential sources that I have gathered were recommended by the school nurse and websites that I have found on my own through the "further links" sections on trusted websites owned by large organisation's such St. John. Next to the potential source you will also find an indication of if the source was Accepted or Not Accepted this means that if the source was accepted it will be of use to me and has been used in the further development of my research found in process journal entry #2.
