Investigation Stage –Evaluation of Sources
During this investigation stage when evaluating my sources I tried to use a variety of sources in order to gain the maximum of information allowing myself to cross reference the information found on the separate sources. I found that it is crucial that the source used to document information and techniques on first aid as health is a sector where innovations, new ideas and new techniques come up all the time in order to perhaps create a faster more prominent technique that may aid in emergency situations. This is why, I have selected different sources and when evaluated found that some were old so eliminated them as invalid and some were detailed and up to date which were accepted.
Questions to keep in mind when passing off specific specification for the sources:
1. Amount of information provided
2. Is this source up to date
3. Who is providing the source, is it reliable
4. How useful is this source to me
5. Accepted/Not Accepted
1. Source: First Aid Manual: The Authorised Manual of St. John Ambulance, St. Andrew's Ambulance Association, and the British Red Cross. London: Dorling Kindersley, 2009. Print. (Accepted)
Purpose: The main purpose of this book is to be a first aid manual a comprehensive guide to treating casualties of all ages in any emergency. It includes all of the different types of first aid and casualties you may encounter and how to assess the situation and act accordingly. I have used many different chapters of this book and has become useful as a whole.
Value: This is a very important and valuable source as it acknowledges specific areas of first aid put together by St. John Ambulance, St. Andrews Ambulance Association and the British Red Cross, which are UK’s leading first aid providers. St. John ambulance is England, Wales, and Northern Irelands leading First Aid charity, St. Andrews Ambulance Association is Scotland’s dedicated First Aid Charity and provider of First Aid services, and the British Red Cross are a part of a global network of volunteers it is also known that the red cross is the worlds leading first aid training provider. The information in this book is based on the most up-to-date research and has great value overall to my research.
Limitation: This book does not have any limitations, fits the necessary purposes and the specifications that are required which means that it is a valid source and therefore accepted as it will come of great use to me.
2. Source: "Teaching By Topic: First Aid Assessment." YouTube. EMS Safety Services, 15 July 2014. Web. (Accepted)
Purpose: The purpose of this video is evident just in the title, Teaching By Topic: First Aid Assessment, these are series of videos created by EMS Safety in order to educate the public on specific areas of first Aid just this link here is on first aid assessment which is a broader topic intro which then goes into the specifics. It is published in order to demonstrate first aid skills and are shown in the video on real life people
Value: These videos belong to a series on YouTube videos, they were posted by EMS Safety Services. EMS Safety Services has been providing quality CPR, AED and First Aid certification programs for over 20 years. Their goal is to earn the confidence of people in the quality of their safety training and first aid products, and keep the customer delighted, safe, and satisfied. "Think of us as your one-stop resource for emergency response training, disaster preparedness, and CPR and first aid supplies. With EMS Safety, you don’t sacrifice quality for value." This is one of their motos, found on their website http://www.emssafetyservices.com/ They are a reliable source as it is a program based and built for the subject solely and have qualified trainers for training people. The great thing about these videos is that they were all posted in the year 2014, so they are not outdated. As healthcare is an on going process there are many developments being made every single day, it is a growing industry. This is why if we use old outdated resources for first aid then the information we will be gaining will not be as useful and depending on the information can mislead. These series of videos have great value as they will giving a visual look into the techniques of first aid before I begin my training.
Limitation: This source passes the different criteria’s and specifications that I had set for a source meaning that I did not find any limitations that have greatly effected the value of this source after an extensive evaluation check, even the background of the source provided EMS Safety Services. The only thing that I came across was the fact that it only has around 900 views, which may just suggest that it is greatly used in only one specific location.
3. "First Aid." - Mayo Clinic. Mayo Clinic, 2015. Web. <http://www.mayoclinic.org/first-aid>. (Accepted)

Their mission is to inspire hope and contribute to health and well-being by providing the best care to every patient through integrated clinical practice, education and research. In addition their primary value follows “The needs of the patient come first.” Physicians, scientists and other medical experts dedicate their time to this site and provide the information that is found, this increases the value of this website other than the previous stated points as all of the information provided passes through several professionals in the field.
Limitation: This website seems to put forward many valuable aspects in fulfilling the specifications provided which leads to the overall value of this website meaning there are not limitations founds.
4. "About | First Aid for Free." First Aid for Free. N.p., 2015. Web. <http://www.firstaidforfree.com/about/>. (Not Accepted)
Purpose: The purpose of this website is to be a free online first aid resource, with a mission to increase awareness of first aid and lifesaving skills.
Value: The information presented on this website is useful and has detailed information however the provided or said information is questionable. Statistics regarding this website have been presented by the publisher as since starting 14,000 people have completed our basic online first aid course; A further 3,000 have completed our advanced online first aid course; We have had over 2 million page views since launching, and Approximately 35,000 people visit our website each month. These statistics suggest that this website is recognized by a certain number of people, and the website date is 2015 which means that the value of the source date meets the specification.
Limitations: The limitations that are currently evident in this website are that they are not recognized by any established organization and is lead by a first aid trainer and life guard John who has experience in the areas however experience does not show evidence that they have received the proper fundamental training and learning by an organization or community who is recognized and authorized in this area, this suggests that the information provided is biased.
In order to further achieve my goal the following are guiding questions:
1. How will the First Aid Training I receive from the nurse be beneficial towards my goal?
2. What makes an effective video?
3. From what angle, camera position, zoom will the shots need to be filmed in order to present the most effective video?
