Training!
Tuesday, March 3rd 2015
Today was my first day in training with Nurse Bilge, it is a Tuesday so it was a short day but I spent the whole day in the clinic. Today was not as busy as the clinic is usually but there were several practical works that I could put into place a part from retaining the theoretical information. Starting at 8:30 we began with the theoretical work first, Nurse bilge explained demonstrating examples on pictures and me from detailed books that are present at the clinic. With the information that she gave I was able to look into and retain. We worked on many different areas categorizing them from general to more specific and from most used and frequently occurring to less frequent. We began by going over DRABC and the primary survey, which are crucial and very important first steps that need to be followed in order to continue on with the workings.

Today there was no school because it was parent teacher conferences, after attending the conference in the morning I headed straight home afterwards and spent 1 hour re reading, re taking notes and studying the work that was done the day before and then another 1 hour using materials I had borrowed to wrap my own ankle, use the triangular sling to tie my arm, what to do in an asthma attack, burns. use paddings to know how to stop bleeding etc… I put all of these into practice before I put myself into a real situation. To be prepared for any situation to occur and take place.

Today was the second day of training, as my training consists of one day theoretical as the information that is retained needs to be put into practice I will be spending the day at the gym with the sports nurse and then spending the rest of the half day at the clinic with Nurse Bilge. Down at the gym it was very exciting because I was now prepared to put my knowledge into place in serious issues that need immediate concern. There were many ankle injuries, swollen knuckles, and also open wounds that needed to be taken care of. I was able to put to use the different techniques that I have practiced and learned. Moreover, there was a stress attack on one patient that caused asthma, during this time I was helping someone with applying a bandage when the girl next to me began to breath rapidly. With this, I ran to the clinic grabbed a inhaler and then aided the girl how to use it, next took her up to the main clinic to have her re examined by Nurse Bilge. Overall, it was a very adventurous day where I was able to put all of what I have used into play.

Today unfortunately is the last day of my training, for this I will be spending the day at the gym with the ISL games taking place this is because I was able to take place and play a great and efficient role in the events that took place mostly at the games during the half day I was present there. Today there were many situations of injured/sprained ankles that needed to be taken care of with the usage of pain killer cremes and well bandaged bandages. In addition, there were instances were I applied the cold spray for a more efficient and fast effect on the injured area for the players that were eager to head back into the games. In addition, today one of the IICS players split their lip open, the sports nurse and I had agreed for him to head to a hospital to receive 3 to 4 stitches as we tried to stop the bleeding however it would not work. The player refused to leave the game as he wanted to head back in and play which is why we bandaged his lip really well and then applied layers of strips to hold the bandages in place. This was not a proper way to handle the situation for a long term effect but it was the right thing to do in respect to the players wishes and as a quick and immediate attention.

Today when I came back to school I was awarded my first aid training course completion certificate and a letter from Nurse Bilge. Scanned copies of both documents can be seen below. I felt really proud of my hard work and continuous efforts that I put forward to learn and perform through all three days. It was really exciting and exhilarating as I did not know what type of situation awaited me next, in addition it was the ISL games to anything could happen such as a broken hand.

Below are both the certificate and letter I was awarded at the end of the training course. I have now been first aid certified by the nurse meaning that I can successfully take forward what I had learned and continue my work in my workshops.
